Peter the Great was a ruler of contrasts—a visionary modernizer and a ruthless autocrat, a man of grand ambition and unpredictable temperament. This course explores the fascinating and tumultuous reign of Russia’s most transformative tsar, who sought to drag his country into modernity through sweeping reforms, military conquests, and cultural revolutions. We will examine his bold efforts to westernize Russia, his creation of a powerful navy, his brutal suppression of opposition, and the enduring legacy of his rule. By engaging with historical accounts, primary sources, and scholarly analysis, students will gain a deeper understanding of how Peter’s brilliance and chaos reshaped Russia and altered the course of world history.
